Your Business Website is the Foundation of Your Online Presence

In today’s digital age, having a business website is no longer just an option; it’s necessary. A well-designed business website is the foundation for your online presence, allowing you to connect with customers, showcase your products or services, and establish credibility in a competitive market.

Whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting out, understanding the importance of a business website can significantly impact your success. This blog post will explore the benefits of having a business website and provide actionable strategies to help you harness its power effectively.

Why Not Having a Business Website Hurts Your Business!

Sit down, folks, and hang on to your seats. I have an alarming bit of news. According to a survey, in 2024, 27% of small businesses did not have a website, and only 23.5% of small businesses without a website plan to create one.

Let me make this clear: If your company has no business website, you might as well close the shop! Not having a business website will work against your business objectives, and this is not just my opinion.

A survey found that in 2024, 27% of small businesses did not have a website.

Every Business (Including Yours!) Needs a Business Website

In the last few years, there has been an active push for consumers to “shop local” and support small businesses, and that is primarily made possible through the Internet. Having an online storefront and marketing to customers outside your geographic area is a huge opportunity for many entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. For all of these reasons, every small business must have a website.

I don’t care what kind of business you have or what product or service you provide. Someone is searching on Google or Bing right now for exactly what you offer. And guess what? Because you have no website, there is no chance in hell that they will find you. Get it?

Not having a website is the digital equivalent of never opening your store or restaurant. If you don’t open, you get no customers. If you get no customers, you get no money. If you get no cash, you go broke. And if you go broke, your business closes. Am I getting through to you yet, or should I type slower?

More than four in five (81%) shoppers conduct online research before making a purchase.

A small business needs a platform that accurately represents who it is and why people should buy its products or use its services. When potential customers are searching for a product or service, you want your website available for them to click on. You want them to see a clean, functional website that makes you feel like your business is the right choice for them. A website represents your brand in the digital space; without it, it would be challenging to have a solid online brand presence.

Repeat after me: not having a website makes no sense! I talk with small business owners every day. And I am always impressed by their passion for their small business. And how hard they work to build, maintain, and run it. And it almost physically hurts me that many don’t understand how badly not having a business website hurt their efforts. It is almost as if they have a mental block regarding having a website. So, let me start by outlining some benefits of having a website for small business.

3 Reasons Why Not Having a Business Website Hurts You!

You are missing the bigger picture if you think you only need a business website to attract new leads. You miss out on many other valuable opportunities by not having a website for your business. Let me explain why having a business website is essential for any business. And just so you can skip ahead if you like, lead generation is a reason for having a website, but not the most important! Here are my top 3 reasons why any business needs a website.

STUDIO FIVE - Having a Business Website Establishes Your Identity

1 – A Business Website Establishes Your Identity

A business website is essential to create a reliable and reputable business identity. It establishes your business as an authority in its niche and makes a public character to which consumers can connect.

Having a website increases your business credibility. In our digital age, not having a website for your business is grounds for suspicion, and you will not be able to convert as many sales as you would if you had a more stable digital presence. Customers will seek you out online, and having a website is one of the criteria for determining trustworthiness.

Not having a website leaves potential customers in the dark regarding who you are and where to find you. You worked hard to establish your brand. Why on earth would you not want to show it off?

Are You a Legit Business?

Having a website increases your business credibility. In our digital age, not having a website for your business is grounds for suspicion, and you will not be able to convert as many sales as you would if you had a more stable digital presence. Customers will seek you out online, and having a website is one of the criteria for determining trustworthiness.

There is another reason why not having a website is not beneficial for your business. Yes, maybe people know about you already. Perhaps a friend told them about your fantastic lunch specials, or a neighbor recommended your freshly baked cupcakes or the variety of toys for kids you carry. Excellent, good for you! However, many potential customers also want to check your business out online. By not having a website, you raise a red flag. Are you a legit business?

Do you think that never happens? I had people check our website on their smartphones while they talked to me. One of our clients, Portfolio Communications, told me their new website gives them the credibility they need to attract new business. So, unless you have something to hide, which means you should not be in business in the first place, you need a business website.

STUDIO FIVE - Having a Business Website Creates Perceived Value

2 – A Business Website Creates Perceived Value

My next reason why not having a website sucks is the value it creates for consumers. Let me ask you this: “Did you Google something today?” If you are like most of us, you did. And what came up in the search results? You got it, a bunch of websites. And many of those are most likely sites telling potential customers about the great stuff the business does and offers.

A recent study shows that 81% of shoppers research online businesses before purchasing. During this research phase, 70-80% will visit a company‘s website. Product sites see even more preresearch – Statistics show that 96% of B2C customers conduct online research before purchasing high-value products. This online vetting stems from buyers wanting to validate quality, reputation, and options before investing substantial money or risk in unfamiliar suppliers.

I guess you don’t want that extra 81% of potential customers by having no website. Well, to each his own! Good luck with that approach.

You Are Turning Potential Consumers Away!

A small business should utilize a website to reach its client base effectively, react, and communicate timely and effectively to its current and prospective clients. Moreover, today’s consumers use websites to identify businesses with which to conduct a transaction and gauge that small business’s trustworthiness or ‘fitness.’ An inadequate or ‘out of date’ website may convey laziness or inattention to detail to today’s consumer – extremely unattractive traits that lead the prospective client to ‘swipe left.’

If you don’t have a website, you turn customers away before they get to your business! Most consumers prefer to deal with a company with an effective and established online presence. It sets you up as a trusted resource for your clients’ needs. Having no website leaves them wondering if you are for real or if you are a shady business.

And guess what? If you make your customers wonder, they tend to wander on to your competitor. I hope your competitors at least thank you for sending them all that extra business!

You heard about content marketing by now, correct? Having a business website allows you to create content that gets shared. And that will enable you to put your business in front of a broader audience. Not having a business website prevents you from creating compelling content.

Social media alone does not have that reach. A helpful website is the hub of your online marketing presence. Everything that you do online connects to your site. If you don’t have one, you are missing out, plain and simple!

STUDIO FIVE - Having a Business Website Generates Leads

3 – A Business Website Generates Leads

This is the part you have been waiting for. Here it is! Not having a website eliminates your primary source of inbound marketing leads. Zip! Nada! That is not going to happen! Someone recently told me “I don’t need a website; I get all my business through email.”

Well, where the hell do you think these emails originate? An engaging and effective business website generates more inbound leads and sales than an entire sales team! And there are a few more benefits: a business website doesn’t take time off, call in sick, go on vacation, or hang out at the water cooler gossiping. No, a business website works for you and your business 24/7!

Every business should have a website for the same reason you plant a seed. Getting a website is the first step toward putting your business in an environment where it can thrive. It allows you to promote your product, build credibility, distinguish yourself, and, quite frankly – compete. If you’re not on the internet these days, you’re not being competitive and will miss out on opportunities, even from loyal customers. If your customers can’t find you, they will find someone else.

How will Consumers Learn About Your Awesome Business?

If you have no website, how will you tell your customers about your business? How will they learn about your unique value proposition, the difference you make for your customers, your hours, and anything else that may make them decide on your brand instead of your competitors?

We built a site for a small local restaurant in Seattle. Manu’s Bodega doesn’t need much more business; they are busy already. But their new website has a slick feature, the ability to order and pay for your lunch online. Only got 30 minutes for lunch? Order and pay from your office and bypass the line when you arrive. Do you want to bet consumers will love that feature? But you can’t offer this convenience if you don’t have a business website.

How will Potential Customers Find You?

In today’s digital world, people turn to Google to find practically anything and everything, from answers to questions to products and services near them. Search engines play an essential role in the online success of businesses.

A professional website will help people find you and get the necessary information. But optimizing your website well can also mean you’ll show up in search results for people who didn’t even know they were looking for you.

Without a website, potential customers cannot find you in their searches. Creating a central location to store your address, phone number, contact form, product/ service list, prices, etc., will allow people to find your business online.

What to Do if You Don’t Have a Business Website

Now you know why not having a business website can hurt your business. I recommend that you get a business website as soon as possible. After all, you don’t want to miss out on all these valuable opportunities, do you? Unless your business is just a money-laundering operation, of course.

I understand that getting a website is daunting for business owners with no business websites. You want to avoid bad web design agencies and get the most out of your web designer. And there are several things to consider before you develop your new business website.

STUDIO FIVE - Your Business Website Equals a Business Investment

Your Business Website Equals a Business Investment

You need to treat a business website as a significant business investment. You chose your store or restaurant location on purpose, carefully planned your inventory, store layout, and restaurant menu, and made sure that everything was top-notch and would help your business succeed.

Unfortunately, many business owners do not give their business websites the same consideration and importance. As a result, many small businesses end up with a questionable website at best and a completely useless one at worst. You get what you pay for, folks!

Here are some fundamental website budget considerations for you. Please remember that your unique situation or business may require a different solution. You should consult a digital creative to help guide you through the process. Anything is better than not having a business website for your company or product brand.

STUDIO FIVE - Basic Web Design Costs

Very Basic Website Budgets

Less than $ 1,000.00

You get a simple website with minimal, if any, custom design, no strategic input, and no support or related services. It’s better than having no business website, but only barely. This kind of website will not work in the long run, trust me!

Development platform: Wix or Weebly

$ 2,000.00 – $ 3,000.00

You can now expect some strategic insight and input on information architecture and content strategy. At the higher end, you can expect more custom designs. This amount would be a better starting point for a professional service provider or small business.

Development platform: Squarespace or WordPress

$ 3,000.00 – $ 6,000.00

This amount is the budget most small business owners need to expect. You can expect comprehensive input on the design and functionality of your business website. Your site will support your business goals and social integration at this level.

Development platform: WordPress

$ 6,000.00 – $ 10,000.00

This includes e-commerce functionality, payment gateway integration, custom forms, extensive strategy and content consultation, and design features.

Development Platform: Shopify, Magento, or WordPress

$ 10,000.00 +

At that range, you can expect a lot. This cost covers content creation, product or location photography, keyword research, on-page, on-site, and local SEO, and full social media integration.

Development Platform: Drupal, MagentoShopify, or WordPress

Gain a Competitive Advantage

In today’s digital landscape, not having a website is a surefire way to jeopardize your business’s future. A website serves as a vital platform that encapsulates your brand identity and communicates the unique value of your products or services to potential customers.

With it, you can take advantage of essential marketing opportunities and expand your growth potential. Embracing a digital presence is no longer optional; it’s crucial to survival.

Consider these three compelling reasons: a professional online presence enhances credibility, broadens your reach, and provides a powerful marketing tool that operates 24/7. Don’t let your business fade into obscurity. Take the initiative to secure your place in the digital market. Contact us for more information and unlock your business’s potential.
